Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Review

I have been using the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition for PC and PlayStation on my Steam Deck, PS5, and PS4 Pro for more than a month in preparation for our most recent comprehensive controller review on TouchArcade. Prior to speaking with PDP Victrix about the controller and arcade sticks, I was quite interested in the controller because of its modular design and because, after years of loving the Xbox Elite (1st generation) and DualSense Edge, I’ve wanted to test out another “Pro” controller.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller – what’s in the box

Controllers often come with a wire and occasionally a charging station. The Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition comes with the following: a blue wireless USB dongle, a screwdriver for the controller, two gates, two replacement analog stick caps, two d-pad caps, a replacement fightpad module with a six-button layout for fighting games, a braided cable, and a high-quality protective case to house the controller and everything else it comes with.

All of the goods are arranged nicely inside the case, which is of excellent quality in and of itself. Some of the things with this controller are themed to match the new Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition look, which sets it apart from the standard Victrix Pro BFG controller. I hope they start selling these soon, but I don’t see any approved substitutes for this, so keep that in mind.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller compatibility

The Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller is compatible with the PC, PS4, and PS5, according to paper. I wanted to know if this would function on Steam Deck straight out of the box because I no longer use Windows. I set it to PS5 and hooked the dongle into my Steam Deck Docking Station because I like the PlayStation button prompts in games. It operated flawlessly and didn’t require any updates.

On the console side, you must set the toggle to PS4 or PS5 and use the same dongle in order to play wirelessly. I played it without any problems on both my PS5 in PS5 mode and my PS4 Pro in PS4 mode.

Actually, this is a great extra to have for when I want to test something on the PS4 to compare with the PS5, as I don’t have other PS4 controllers that function other than arcade sticks that support the PS4.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller features

The Victrix Pro BFG controller’s main selling point is its modular design, which allows you to work with both symmetric and asymmetric stick layouts, switch up the fightpad for fighting games, and modify the triggers, thumbsticks, and d-pads. Allowing you to modify the controller based on the game you’re playing was the goal of this design. For instance, I might switch to the Xbox-style asymmetric arrangement when playing DOOM Eternal, but I would utilize the symmetric stick configuration when playing Katamari Damacy Reroll.

It’s also fantastic that I can choose the trigger stop when playing racing games that support analog triggers, and when playing games that support digital triggers, I can choose the shortest stop. Apart from that, I think the various d-pad options are great, but I’ve been attempting to get used to the default diamond-shaped one because I really enjoy it. The other d-pad options are good here, but I wouldn’t use it for platformers.

It is important to note that this controller, which is officially licensed for the PS5 and PS4, does not feature gyro/motion control, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, or rumbling. Gyro isn’t important to me, but it’s frustrating that there isn’t any rumbling at all given that controllers under $30 now have respectable rumble, even if they aren’t PS5 compatible. I’ve seen additional reports from people using different third-party controllers here, and I’ve been told that third-party wireless controllers for the PS5 may also have rumble limits. This is regrettable in any case.

Four paddles, or buttons that resemble paddles, are included with the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition. However, I wish there were appropriate paddles you could take out. Since I use those the most in games like Monster Hunter World and detest tapping the sticks, I mapped two of them to L3 and R3, and the ones above to L1 and R1. However, it’s great to have four buttons here.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller look and feel

I adore the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition’s stunning and vivid highlights and colors. With its light blue, pink, purple, and Tekken 8 logo, it looks great for a themed controller, however it isn’t as sleek as the normal black model with purple highlights.

Although the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition is quite cozy, I don’t like how light it is. The primary controller body’s material can feel high-end or just fine. Although the DualSense Edge feels much more luxurious, the controller’s unsightly shiny front plate detracts from the experience.

I’ve used the controller connected for eight hours without growing weary of holding it, and the grip makes a significant difference. Here, being light is advantageous.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller on PS5

There are a few things to consider when playing PS5. Although this controller has an official license, you cannot use it to power on your PS5. Although it is annoying to consider, this appears to be a restriction for third-party controllers on the PS5. Other than that, gyro, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback are not accessible here. It contains all the buttons I use on a DualSense controller, including the share button, plus it supports touchpads.

Victrix Pro BFG on Steam Deck

As previously stated, the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition is compatible with Steam Deck straight out of the box when the dongle is connected to the proper Docking Station that I use. With the share button functioning for taking screenshots and the touchpad functioning properly in PC games that use PlayStation controllers, it even accurately identifies itself as a PS5 Victrix controller. Since some games don’t even properly identify my DualSense, this was wonderful to see.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller battery life

The battery life of the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller, or the standard one, is a significant advantage over the DualSense and DualSense Edge. On a single charge, it lasts several times longer than the DualSense and DualSense Edge. Additionally useful is the touchpad’s logo, which shows when the battery is low. Other controllers don’t really show when the battery is down, so this is great for playing on Steam Deck.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller software

Since I no longer use Windows and the software is only available through the Microsoft Store, I was unable to test it. Fortunately, it is compatible with the PS4, PS5, and Steam Deck right out of the box. The controller’s compatibility with iOS was the only thing I was hoping to see. I tried using the dongle on my iPad wirelessly, as well as wired on my iPhone 15 Pro and iPad Pro, but both of these methods failed.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller negatives

It has some significant drawbacks at the moment. These include the lack of rumbling, the low polling rate, the fact that the Hall Effect sensors are not included in the box, and the fact that, at least for the model I own, a dongle is needed for wireless. Some people might not mind the absence of rumble, but the polling rate is disappointing for a “Pro” controller. YouTube has a number of videos that demonstrate this and explain why it is an issue. The DualSense Edge wired has a far superior response in comparison.

Regarding the Hall Effect sensors, I’m happy that Victrix now offers the updated modules, but why don’t new controller orders come with those already? Additionally, if I were to purchase either of the available module colors for my Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller, it would not have PS5 face buttons and would not match the aesthetic.

Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition Controller Review

I can honestly state that I enjoy using the controller after getting well over a hundred hours of use out of it across platforms for games like Persona 3 Reload, Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, UFO 50, and many more. However, considering its price, the few problems are frustrating. If it receives some updates and modifications for a possible successor, the Victrix Pro BFG Tekken 8 Rage Art Edition could be among the greatest controllers in years. There are currently too many restrictions on it due to its high asking price, which ensures that it is good but not exceptional.

The polling rate, dongle required, extra expense for Hall Effect sticks, and absence of rumbling (which appears to be a Sony restriction) are the main things preventing it from progressing at the moment. Some people might not care about them, but I thought a $200 “Pro” controller should include a little more.
